Indications/Uses
DM in adult, adolescents & childn ≥2 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administer SC once daily at the same time everyday. Dose & timing of dose should be individually adjusted.
Special Precautions
Hypothyroidism. Transfer from other types of insulin. Inadequate dosing or discontinuation of treatment. Illness or major injury; not eating enough. Insulin treatment may produce Ab to insulin (very rarely). Heart failure in patients w/ long-standing type 2 DM & heart disease or previous stroke treated w/ pioglitazone & insulin. Monitor blood sugar frequently. Switch from 1 insulin therapy to another require medical prescription, medical supervision & blood glucose monitoring. For SC use only. Renal or hepatic impairment. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia; severe allergic reactions. Lipoatrophy, lipohypertrophy; skin & allergic reactions at inj site eg, reddening, unusually intense inj pain, itching, hives, swelling or inflammation. Temporary visual impairment, Na retention, edema, retinopathy. Insulin administration may cause insulin antibodies to form.
Drug Interactions
May cause hyperglycemia w/ all other medicines to treat diabetes, ACE inhibitors, disopyramide, fluoxetine, fibrates, MAOIs, pentoxifylline, propoxyphene, salicylates, sulfonamides. May cause hyperglycemia w/ corticosteroids, danazol, diazoxide, diuretics, glucagon, INH, oestrogens & progestogens, phenothiazine derivatives, somatropin, sympathomimetics (eg, epinephrine, salbutamol, terbutaline), thyroid hormones, atypical antipsychotics (eg, clozapine, olanzapine), PIs. Enhanced/reduced effects w/ β-blockers, clonidine, lithium salts & alcohol. Pentamidine may cause hypoglycemia, sometimes followed by hyperglycemia. May weaken or suppress entirely the 1st warning symptoms of hypoglycemia w/ β-blocker, clonidine, guanethidine & reserpine.
